Japanese translation of
“Building Age-Friendly Societies in Asia”
The Japan NPO Center (JNPOC), a project partner of the Hong Kong-based Centre for Asian Philanthropy and Society (CAPS), is pleased to announce the release of the Japanese translation of the research report: “Building Age-Friendly Societies in Asia: Philanthropy and Private Social Investment for the Elderly.”
This report analyzes the rapid pace of aging across six Asian economies (Mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Chinese Taipei, and Thailand). It provides practical guidance on how to direct private capital, including philanthropy and private investment, toward five strategic priorities that are highly impactful and effective in building sustainable, age-friendly societies.
The report highlights the following five areas where private social investment can move the needle:
Rethinking Aging (From Burden to Agency): Reframing aging to unlock older adults’ leadership and economic roles.
Enabling Community Living: Supporting aging in place through community-based services and age-friendly infrastructure.
Strengthening the Care System: Investing in caregivers’ skills, well-being, and career paths.
Scaling the Silver Economy: Expanding inclusive markets that serve a wider range of older adults.
Leveraging Technology: Harnessing user-centric technology that enhances autonomy and is paired with human support.
As the most demographically advanced economy among the six, Japan stands as the Super-Aging Frontier, offering an “essential reference point” that illuminates pressures and emerging issues the rest of Asia will soon confront.
The report notes that while Japan’s mandatory LTC insurance system serves as an international benchmark, it also clearly illustrates the fiscal and workforce strains mature systems face. Furthermore, the focus on Integrated Community Care provides valuable insights into local support organization, alongside highlighting ongoing challenges like social isolation. Japanese innovations, led by NPOs and civic actors, offer cautionary and constructive lessons regarding policy choices and practical responses for other Asian economies.
